Pucker UP!

The way you start your day is incredibly important.

How do you begin your morning? For years I have loved my morning routine...I got up, fixed a delicious cup of coffee and sat down for my quiet time. Enjoying the wonderful aroma of the coffee, the stillness of the morning, and time to prepare for the day. Morning routines and rituals are so important to setting the tone for the day that is ahead of you.

However, my routine was challenged and changed when I began a 21 Day Detox. I was committed and determined to following the detox plan 100%, and that meant exchanging coffee for a cup of lemon water! Yep! You heard correctly...a WARM CUP OF LEMON WATER! Until then I never knew the benefits of beginning my day with warm lemon water, which is now my normal routine.

If you can only make time for one ritual or can make a change to your morning routine let it be this...

Start your day with a warm cup of water and the juice of one half of lemon! It is quite simple and the health benefits are just too good to ignore. Lemon water:

1. Wakes up your digestive system.
Lemons are high in minerals and vitamins and it helps loosen toxins in the digestive tract. Warm lemon water stimulates the gastrointestinal tract which keeps thins moving. Boosts your immune system. Lemons are high in Vitamin C, which is great for fighting colds, and the Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) found in lemons has anti-inflammatory effects. Lemons are also high in potassium, which stimulates brain and nerve function. The potassium also helps control blood pressure. Lastly, lemons reduce the amount of phlegm produced by the body.

2. Balances pH.
We all know lemons are very acidic on their own, but they are one of the most alkalizing foods in the body. They contain both citric and ascorbic acid, which are weak acids that can easily be metabolized from the body allowing the mineral content of lemons to help alkalize the blood. Diseases only occur when the pH is acidic. Drinking lemon water regularly can help to remove overall acidity in the body, including uric acid in the joints, which is one of the primary causes of pain and inflammation.

3. Is excellent for weight loss.
Since lemons are high in pectin fiber they help fight hunger cravings. It has also been noted that people who maintain an alkaline body tend to lose weight faster.

4. Acts as a gentle diuretic.
Because lemons cause the increase in urination toxins are released faster; therefore, it helps keep your urinary tract healthy.

5. Clears skin.
The Vitamin C helps decrease blemishes and wrinkles, and lemon water purges toxins from the blood which helps keep skin clear as well.

6. Hydrates the lymph system.
Warm water and lemon juice supports the immune system by replacing water lost by your body. When your body is dehydrated it can't perform all of it's functions properly and you may feel tired, sluggish, constipated, lack sleep and lack clear mental clarity to name a few side effects.

7. Promotes healing.
The Ascorbic Acid in lemons promotes healing of wounds and is an essential nutrient in the maintenance of healthy bones, connective tissue, and cartilage! And do not forget the Vitamin C displays anti-inflammatory properties.

Changing your daily habit by beginning the day with a warm cup of lemon water could be just the jumpstart your body needs. It is really quite simple...just one cup of warm water with the juice of one half a fresh lemon. You may even be surprised by the extra boost of energy and clearness of mind you have to begin your day!
